Commons:Permission requests
This page is a forum for requesting permission from copyright holders for their works to be used under a license compatible with Commons. Experienced volunteers will reach out to the copyright holder, request their permission to release the work under a compatible license, and help facilitate the issuance and verification of that release so that the work can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and used in Wikimedia projects. To apply to become a volunteer, please apply here.
Before you add a request, consider reaching out to the copyright holder yourself in accordance with the guidance here and here.

Name or alias of the author: (Many artists)
Contact information: https://help.artstation.com/s/?language=en_US
Reason the work is useful to include on Commons: Please make it possible for artists to specify a creative commons license in the upload's settings – such could be used to for example illustrate art genres & styles, topics & objects etc of fiction, and art techniques among other things

- What are the chances that the artists will use the Creative Commons license on files they do not own the rights to? Trade (talk) 17:43, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Trade: Then the license is invalid. Only the copyright holder can issue a valid license. Yann (talk) 17:48, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- I asked how big the issue would be Trade (talk) 17:49, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you mean. Yann (talk) 18:06, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- They're asking whether there would be a high incidence of invalidly-claimed ownership and licensure. I don't know if it's a relevant question, as we allow licenses declared on any platform and assess invalid and fraudulent claims case-by-case, not based on the platform of issuance. Zanahary (talk) 18:26, 13 October 2025 (UTC)

- I asked how big the issue would be Trade (talk) 17:49, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- I think very low because artstation is nearly only artists posting art files they made themselves, not for posting art made by any other artists. Prototyperspective (talk) 18:13, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Trade: Then the license is invalid. Only the copyright holder can issue a valid license. Yann (talk) 17:48, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- Stipulation 17a in their TOS may complicate this:
You hereby grant a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully paid-up, perpetual, irrevocable, sub-licensable (through multiple tiers) right and license to Epic to use, reproduce, publicly display, adapt, modify, reformat, and distribute Your Content, and to use the name that you provide in association with Your Content, as necessary to provide, improve and promote the Services.
This right and license is compatible with the CC0 deed, but not with CC-BY or any more restrictive licenses, as they would add a term to this automatically-granted right and license to Epic—namely, that of attribution in the case of republication, which the TOS does not make explicit as being part of the automatic license's terms. Zanahary (talk) 18:30, 13 October 2025 (UTC)- I think this just means that the file is CCBY with additional permissions for Epic. It doesn't mean the file can't be licensed under CCBY. [edit]Link to the work: https://klimadashboard.org
Name or alias of the author: klimadashboard team
Contact information: team at klimadashboard.org
Reason the work is useful to include on Commons: Up-to-date good-quality charts about climate change are useful. Permission for free use is given but no specific license is named/set. From the site's FAQ (translated) Can graphics and data be reused?
All graphics may be reused, whether for teaching, reporting, or other purposes. Each graphic can be exported as an image or interactive iFrame in the top right corner. Furthermore, we link to the raw dataset for almost all graphics. These datasets may be used to create your own graphics, provided you acknowledge the original source (and comply with the respective regulations of the source).

Name or alias of the author: See authors of the study (and study infos?)
Contact information: Retrieve contact info from the study authors online
Reason the work is useful to include on Commons: Those are CC BY-NC-ND data graphics from the study "The global human day". They are super interesting and would be useful in lots of articles in lots of context. They are charts on the global average day in terms of contemporary human time use. Maybe and hopefully some of these can be licensed under CCBY/CCBYSA.

- For reference, the authors' emails are:
William Fajzel: william.fajzel@mail.mcgill.ca
Eric D. Galbraith: eric.galbraith@mcgill.ca
Christopher Barrington-Leigh: chris.barrington-leigh@mcgill.ca
Jacques Charmes: jacques.charmes@ird.fr
Elena Frie: LinkedIn
Ian Hatton: Can't find, but he works at a laboratory whose contact email is Gakbraith's.

Ron Milo: ron.milo@weizmann.ac.il
Kelton Minor: kmi@sodas.ku.dk
Xinbei Wan: LinkedIn
Veronica Xia: LinkedIn
Shirley Xu: LinkedInThe article's copyright notice says that the copyright for the article belongs to the authors, so contacting them should work. I would advise anyone tackling this one to ask the principal authors (Fajzel and Galbraith) who exactly made the graphics, so that we can ask them directly instead of trying to extract permission from twelve separate researchers. I find it unlikely that the creator of the graphics transferred copyright to the collective of paper authors. Zanahary (talk) 19:14, 13 October 2025 (UTC)

- Reached out to her gallery. Zanahary (talk) 18:55, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, that's terrific! Thank you. I wasn't actually sure if this project was live, or still a prototype/concept of some sort. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 19:37, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- I am excited to say it is live! Tell your friends ;)Her gallery has directed the inquiry to her. Zanahary (talk) 19:40, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- (Not sure exactly why, but somehow the following reply was misplaced here and didn't end up in this thread.)
- Brilliant! Good to know the project is now active. I'll certainly drop a few curtesy links around in places where folks might be inclined to participate. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:47, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- PS: One obvious place is Wikipedia:A picture of you (I just put a curtesy link on the Talk page). -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:47, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- It might also be worth trying to reach Kare herself (or an assistant). Perhaps if the Ann Rhoney shot is a no, there's another image that would be a go? Frankly, the Rhoney photograph would be great, but anything (well, nearly anything, I should say) would be an improvement over what we're currently using. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 06:50, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
- If Rhoney doesn’t get back to me, I will reach out to Susan. Zanahary (talk) 15:07, 16 October 2025 (UTC)

Name or alias of the author: Sabine Marcelis (various photographers indicated at source)
Contact information: https://sabinemarcelis.com/about or studio@sabinemarcelis.com
Reason the work is useful to include on Commons: Photo of the piece "Candy Cubes" needed to illustrate Wikipedia article about the subject (as well as possibly other related articles). Any image found at source would be fine, but preferably the pink one that is in the Museum of Modern Art. Additional photos of works by the designer would also be appreciated.
