Renaming requests
Please, be a little more attentive to Svetlov Artem's requests - his ideas frequently are not good at all. Анастасия Львоваru/en 20:09, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Anastasiya. I declined his requests for renames of several files, including some of yours. Most of the moves I've done for Artyom are his own files. I don't like the anglicizing of Russian language names, so I wont do those. Can you show me some examples of other problematic requests from him that I should decline or avoid? Geoffroi 20:16, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- File:078-33 Старые фотографии Выборга.jpg -> File:078-33 Старые фотографии Выборга здание страховой компании Карьяла.jpg is an example. In principle, it was unclear what the image depicted when uploaded, and it could be clarified after categorization, but the name he suggested was much more meaningless due to his disdain for punctuation. Анастасия Львоваru/en 20:19, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- This could be a big problem. There's 100+ of his requests in Category:Media requiring renaming, with hundreds more to come. Pinging some native Russian-speaking admins for advice. @EugeneZelenko: , @George Chernilevsky: , @Ymblanter: If you guys have time, can you take a look at this? Geoffroi 20:36, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- I was on a conference and will help with Russian-language requests soon, so I don't think it is a problem :) Анастасия Львоваru/en 20:40, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. This is complicated to me because most of his requests are for his own uploads here and from Geograph.org, and uploader requested renames are processed less strictly than the other criterion. I did notice that his latest requests are a bit strange. He's used Zhukovsky and Zhukovskiy, for example. I also noticed a request on a 1971 file for a rename of Kharkov to Kharkiv. I was under the impression that Kharkov was the correct name during the Soviet era. I'm sure you can handle this way better than I can. Geoffroi 21:05, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- I think Kharkov is still correct when used in file names (let not open can of worms about categorization) - it's just transliteration from Russian and photographers could use preferred transliteration. What concerns Vyborg file names, I would used some kind of punctuation to split collection name (Старые фотографии Выборга) from building name (здание страховой компании Карьяла), for example, colon or period (with capitalizing Здание in later case). - What concerns Vyborg file names - I already did exactly this, File:078-33 Старые фотографии Выборга. Здание страховой компании Карьяла.jpg :) Анастасия Львоваru/en 01:04, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Patroller!

Hi Geoffroi,
You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.
As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.
We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.
If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. Kadı Message 09:17, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
Hi @Geoffroi. I've problems to display the file. Sometimes I can see the picture after renaming, sometimes it disappears without a seeable reason. Urmelbeauftragter (talk) 19:41, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
- Have you tried purging the page cache? Geoffroi 19:45, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
- That was may be the reason. Reloading the page didn't work but closing the tab and open the file again. Urmelbeauftragter (talk) 20:22, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Urmelbeauftragter: In your Preferences you can go to Gadgets/Maintenance tools and check the top two boxes labeled Thumbnail Purge and Page Purge. This will give you simple purge options in the dropdown tools list on all pages. Geoffroi 20:30, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
- Until now it didn't happen again. It seems to me the reason was I had open the article in German Wikipedia while the file name was changed. Urmelbeauftragter (talk) 20:55, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
